As an English teacher and a former media specialist, I love reading! At any given moment, I might be in the middle of four or five books. Reading can let me escape, and it can broaden my perspectives. Currently, I’m reading Glory Over Everything by Kathleen Grissom, Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess, Murder at the Book Club by Betsey Reavley, and Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King & Owen King. I’m in a few book discussion groups to push me out of my comfort zone and get me reading things I might not gravitate to on my own. I set reading goals for myself each year, too: sometimes I just shoot for a specific number, but I’ve also made goals to read more non-fiction (I prefer fantasy and sci-fi) or to read books by different authors.

Various studies show that students who read for pleasure outside of academic coursework do better in school! This article links to some studies about this, if you’re interested in learning more: http://www.ala.org/aasl/sites/ala.org.aasl/files/content/aaslpubsandjournals/slr/vol3/SLMR_IndependentReading_V3.pdf

Last week, I sent out a survey to find out which students in my courses read outside of the classroom. Thank you to everyone who participated, and stay tuned to find out what your classmates are reading! Week 10’s SHOUT OUT goes to these students who read above and beyond what’s required in school:

  • Jessica A.
  • Joshua A.
  • Lauren E.
  • Chloe M.
  • Tyler M.
  • Fallon P.
  • Ryan W.
  • Riley W.
  • Bryson Z.

Some of you who told me you DON’T read outside of school aren’t reading simply because you aren’t sure what to read! I’m hoping to share what your classmates are reading soon, and I’m happy to provide some suggestions.
